RANCHI: Shibu Soren, the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and the revered founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), is being laid to rest with full state honours in his native village of Nemra today. The 81-year-old leader, affectionately known as ‘Dishom Guru’ (Guru of the land), passed away on Monday (August 4) at Sir Gangaram Hospital in Delhi after a prolonged illness, including kidney disease and a recent stroke.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, MLA Kalpana Soren, former Chief Minister Raghuvar Das, Champai Soren, Babulal Marandi and other prominent leaders have paid tribute at the last rites. These leaders are also likely to attend the funeral. Lok Sabha MP from Purnia Pappu Yadav has reached Ranchi, while Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi are also heading towards Ranchi to join the last rites. Apart from this, former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Tejashwi Yadav has also left for Ranchi, and TMC MPs Shatabdi Roy and Derek O’Brien have also reached Ranchi.

Earlier on Monday, PM Modi paid tribute to the former CM. He visited the residence to offer condolences to Shibhu Soren and shared pictures on his official account on X.

Shibu Soren’s funeral will be held at Nemra village in Ramgarh district, for which the administration has made extensive preparations. Other administrative officials, including the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, have been deployed. Special arrangements have been made for traffic and security at the funeral site, as political personalities from many states are expected to arrive.

His son and current Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren confirmed this sad news.
