Mumbai: The Maha Vikas Aghadi has finalized the seat-sharing formula in Maharashtra for the Lok Sabha election 2024, with the Shiv Sena (UBT) contesting on 21 seats, Congress 17 and NCP (SP) 10, announced Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Tuesday, April 9.
The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) will contest 21 seats while the Sharad Pawar-headed Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) is set to fight in 10 seats. Meanwhile, the Congress is going to contest 17 seats.
The seat-sharing formula was announced in a joint press conference addressed by Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray and the Congress leadership including state Congress President Nana Patole, Congress Legislature Party leader Balasaheb Thorat and former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.
According to latest data, only seven constituencies in Maharashtra have polled over 70% since 1977. Prominent candidates who have contested from the state include former chief ministers Congress Ashok Chavan (Nanded), Sushilkumar Shinde (Solapur), Nationalist Congress Party’s Supriya Sule, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Pritam Munde (Beed) and Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar (Solapur).
In 2014, BJP won 23 seats in the state while its alliance partner, the Shiv Sena, got 18 in Maharashtra. The Congress was the worst affected with its tally going down from 17 (in 2009) to just two seats. Sharad Pawar’s NCP won four seats in the 2014 elections.
The Election Commission registered 8,73,30,484 voters during a special awareness drive in 2018. The highest voters were added from Thane (2,97,920). Mumbai added 2,84,912 voters while Nashik (2,08,724) and Pune registered 2,00,888 voters.
