Srinagar: A campaign for election awareness was held in Asia’s largest tulip garden in Srinagar to create awareness among people for vigorous participation in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections scheduled on May 13, 2024. Nestled between Dal Lake and Zabarwan Hills, the tulip garden was chosen for the campaign due to its significant footfall. This electoral awareness program was held under the direction of District Election Officer (DEO) Srinagar, Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, who is also the Returning Officer (RO) for the 02-Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency.
A school teacher, Nazia Pandit, said that the tulip garden is the best place to create this awareness as thousands of people come to visit. Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) aims to build a truly participative democracy by invigorating all eligible citizens to vote. The District Election Officer of Srinagar said that such events aim to enhance awareness among voters and boost public participation.
The campaign particularly sensitized the young voters about the value of voting because young boys and girls volunteered with the Jammu and Kashmir Government to raise awareness. The government claimed that these programs help to spread the message to their parents, relatives and community emphasizing the significance of their participation in nation-building through elections.
”It’s very essential to vote for the betterment of the society. We are aware of the significance of elections. Since many people are not aware that they have to vote at the age of 18, we are campaigning to make people aware of the election process and its importance. It’s also very crucial to choose the best government,” said Arwami, a student. School-going children playing guitars and singing songs in Srinagar’s world-famous Tulip Garden managed to hold hundreds of people visiting the garden.
