As part of a strong anti-electioneering effort, the Election Commission of India (ECI) revealed on Wednesday that cumulative seizures in the upcoming elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have surpassed the ₹1,000 crore threshold. The revelation came a day ahead of the two states voting for the first phase of their respective Assembly elections in 2026.

The electoral management body emphasized that a rigorous crackdown had been launched to ensure that the election is “money-free.” Although the aggregate seizures amounted to ₹865 crores by late last week, a last-minute raid during the preceding 48 hours resulted in the seizure of cash, gold, and liquor worth millions of rupees.

Unprecedented Enforcement

According to the ECI, the seizures include:

  • Cash: Over ₹125 crore in unaccounted currency.
  • Narcotics: Drugs and psychotropic substances valued at more than ₹200 crore.
  • Precious Metals: Gold and silver ornaments worth approximately ₹180 crore.
  • Freebies: Pressure cookers, sarees, and electronic items intended for distribution to voters.

High-Stakes Vigilance

To monitor the high-stakes battle between major regional and national players, the Commission has deployed over 5,000 Flying Squad Teams (FSTs) and 5,300 Static Surveillance Teams (SSTs) across the two states.

“The magnitude of the seizures not only suggests the efforts made to influence voters but also indicates our resolve to ensure a fair election,” said an ECI spokesperson. With Tamil Nadu and West Bengal being termed “expenditure sensitive” states, the Commission appointed additional Special Expenditure Observers for this election.
