Ranchi: Champai Soren resigned on Wednesday as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand ahead of the assembly elections due in the state. He tendered his resignation to the governor. Jharkhand Multi Morcha (JMM) executive president Hemant Soren staked his claim to form the new government.
While stepping down from the post, Champai Soren addressed the media and said, “I was made the chief minister a few days ago. This gave me the responsibility of the state. Since Hemant Soren is back as our leader, I have decided to resign as the chief minister”.
The governor will now decide a date for swearing ceremony of Hemant Soren and his cabinet. With this, Champai Soren will be named as the Executive President of JMM. Sources confirmed that the decision was taken to ensure that the upcoming elections were fought with Hemant Soren as the face of the party. At present, JMM constitutes 27 MLAs in the 81-member Assembly while Congress has 18 members. RJD and the CPI have one each. Meanwhile, BJP that has 24 MLSs have hit out at Hemant Soren and repeated its dynastic politics charges
Champai Soren is an old party loyalist who had taken over the reins of the state five months back when Hemant Soren was arrested by ED. He was sworn as the chief minister on February 2. His sudden move comes after JMM’s allies i.e. Congress and the RJD unanimously supported the return of their leader Hemant Soren.
Hemant Soren was granted bail by the High Court on June 28. Soon after he claimed that he has been a victim of conspiracy.
