Aizawl: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday released a list of 12 candidates for the 40-seat Mizoram assembly election, scheduled on November 7.
“The Central Election Committee of the Bhartiya Janata Party has decided the names for ensuing General Elections to the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram!”, tweeted BJP.
The BJP has fielded candidates in all 12 seats where it had contested in the 2018 assembly elections. The party has also fielded two new candidates.
The BJP’s list of candidates includes a mix of experienced and new faces. The party has fielded two sitting MLAs, Lalrinsanga Sailo and Vanlalzawm Jacob. Sailo is the BJP’s state president, while Jacob is the party’s legislative leader.
The BJP has also fielded a number of new candidates, including former Congress MLA C.L. Ruala and former MNF MLA Lalruatliana.
The BJP is hoping to make a breakthrough in Mizoram in the upcoming assembly elections. The party had won only one seat in the 2018 assembly elections. However, the BJP has been gaining ground in the state in recent months.
The BJP’s campaign for the Mizoram assembly polls will be led by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), G. Kishan Reddy. Reddy is a senior BJP leader from Andhra Pradesh.
The BJP’s main challenger in the Mizoram assembly polls will be the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF). The MNF has been in power in Mizoram for the last 10 years.
The Congress is also a major player in Mizoram politics. The Congress had ruled Mizoram for over 20 years before it was defeated by the MNF in the 2018 assembly elections.
The BJP is hoping to capitalize on the anti-incumbency factor against the MNF government to win the upcoming assembly elections. The BJP is also hoping to attract voters who are unhappy with the Congress.
