Patna: With the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, set to wind up his long innings, Bihar stands at the crossroads of a political transformation. While the veteran politician has called the last cabinet meeting to be held at 11 a.m. on April 14, Tuesday, speculation abounds that he will resign to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain in the coming hours.
A New Phase Begins
This comes amid reports that Kumar was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP on April 10 and is done with his political dream of being a part of all the four legislative bodies. As he moves ahead to play a part in national politics after becoming a part of all the four bodies, Kumar has reportedly vacated his official residence in 7, Circular Road.
The Turn of the BJP
For the first time ever in Bihar, the BJP stands at the threshold of occupying the seat of the Chief Ministership of the state. Though the party has been the ruling party of the state for decades, it has always been playing second fiddle to Kumar within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
This is evident from the results of the 2025 Assembly Election, whereby the BJP came out as the largest single party in terms of numbers:
BJP: 89 seats
JD(U): 85 seats
NDA Total: 202 out of 243 seats
Contenders to Replace Nitish Kumar
With the NDA legislative party planning to hold talks following the resignation, here are a few potential candidates:
Samrat Choudhary: This individual serves as the current Deputy CM of Bihar, and is regarded as the favorite candidate to continue the OBC support for his party.
Nityanand Rai: This minister of home affairs is among the popular contenders for replacing Nitish Kumar.
Nishant Kumar: On the interesting side, posters supporting Nitish Kumar’s son as his successor have been spotted in Patna city.
With a planned press conference at 12:30 p.m. today, it looks like the “remote control” of Bihar will be firmly in the hands of BJP leadership in Delhi.
