Mumbai: Air India flight AI 2744, an Airbus A320 (registration VT-TYA) arriving from Kochi, experienced a runway excursion while landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) today morning. Amidst heavy rainfall lashing the city at around 9:27 AM, the aircraft skid off the main Runway 27, run into an unpaved area, and then onto a taxiway before coming to a complete halt.
“Flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked. The aircraft has been grounded for checks. The safety of passengers and crew remains our top priority,” an Air India spokesperson said.
While the aircraft sustained some damage, reportedly including three burst tyres and potential engine issues, it remained functional and was able to taxi safely to a parking bay. Crucially, all passengers and crew disembarked without any injuries, a testament to the crew’s professionalism and the swift activation of CSMIA’s emergency response teams.
Meanwhile, CSMIA has issued a passenger advisory. “In view of the heavy rain forecast in Mumbai, passengers are advised to check their flight status with their respective airlines and allow extra travel time to reach the airport”, read a tweet from official account of Mumbai Airport on X.
The heavy monsoon rains significantly reduced visibility and created slippery conditions on the runway, contributing to the aircraft’s inability to maintain alignment upon touchdown. This incident has led to the temporary closure of the primary Runway 09/27 for inspections and repairs, with airport operations diverted to the secondary Runway 14/32 to ensure continuity.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has dispatched a team to investigate the matter thoroughly, aiming to determine the precise factors that led to the runway overshot.
