Washington: Seasoned social media application went down on Monday evening, captivating nearly 10.6 million individuals globally. Facebook-owned WhatsApp, Instagram and the app itself went dark at around 9 pm IST and was restored service roughly after 6 hours.
Security experts predict this outage could be a result of an internal mistake of the DNS server. This was the second blow to the social media giant this year after a whistleblower accused the company of making profits over hate speech and discriminating content.
Apologizing for the disruption in the services, Mr Zuckerberg stated that services would return online on Tuesday. Taking to Twitter, WhatsApp said, “Apologies to everyone who hasn’t been able to use WhatsApp today. We’re starting to slowly and carefully get WhatsApp working again. Thank you so much for your patience. We will continue to keep you updated when we have more information to share.”
The US led the world in the number of reports for disrupted service of more than 1.7 million, followed by Germany at 1.3 million reports and the Netherlands at 9,15,000 reports. The social media accounts reported a loss of nearly 2 billion daily active users, slipping down the trading by 5.3 per cent on Monday afternoon.
