Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has taken a significant step towards cleaning and revitalizing the Yamuna River. In its 173rd meeting held on Monday, the board gave administrative approval for the expansion of sewage treatment plants and the upgradation of existing projects for Rs 917.33 crore in the national capital.

According to officials, these proposals aim to increase the total sewage treatment capacity to 51.5 million gallons per day (MGD) through the upgradation of infrastructure, construction, and maintenance of new plants. The DJB said that this initiative is in line with the standards set by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and NGT.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has announced a new initiative to reduce waste going into the Yamuna. Under this scheme, a sewage treatment plant (STP) with a capacity of 25 MGD has been approved in Yamuna Vihar Phase-III, which is planned to be increased to 40 MGD. Apart from this, Phase IV also includes the construction of a new 15 MGD capacity STP.

Delhi Jal Board has informed that this project, worth Rs 403 crore, also includes provision for maintenance for 12 years. Both STP units together will provide additional treatment capacity of 30 MGD. Apart from this, under another approved proposal, the first phase of Keshopur STP will be upgraded, which will increase the capacity of the plant from 12 to 18 MGD.

A project worth Rs 381 crore covering 5 STP plants in south and south-west Delhi has been approved. The project includes capacity enhancement of Vasant Kunj Phase-I (2.2 to 3.2 MGD), Phase-II (3 to 4.5 MGD), Ghitorni (5 to 7.5 MGD), Mehrauli (5 to 7.5 MGD) and Okhla Phase-V (16 to 24 MGD) plants.
