Mahakumbh 2025.  During the Mahakumbh, devotees are continuously bathing in the Sangam. The grandeur of the Kumbh Mela is being discussed not only in India but all over the world. People from all over the country are coming to this event. Along with this, people from across the seven seas are also visiting Sangam city. The number of devotees bathing in the Mahakumbh is continuously increasing.

In the Mahakumbh more than 1.74 crore devotees took holy dip in the holy confluence in Prayagraj on Republic day. So far, more than 13.21 crore devotees have taken a holy dip in the holy Triveni. However, do you know why Sikhs are participating in Mahakumbh? Do they have a history related to it?

Why Sikhs Are Participating In Mahakumbh

The Sikh connection to the Mahakumbh is primarily through the Udasi sect, which traces its origins to Baba Sri Chand, the elder son of Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Guru. The Udasis, while maintaining reverence for Guru Nanak, developed their own distinct traditions and practices, often incorporating elements of Hindu asceticism.

Over time, the Udasis became associated with the Kumbh Mela, participating in the gatherings and establishing their own akharas (ascetic orders). These akharas, like their Hindu counterparts, played a significant role in the Kumbh Mela, organizing processions, rituals, and debates.

The Nirmala sect, another Sikh order, also has connections to the Kumbh Mela. The Nirmalas, known for their scholarship and study of Hindu scriptures, further exemplify the Sikh presence at this significant Hindu pilgrimage.

The participation of the Udasis and Nirmalas in the Mahakumbh highlights the complex and interwoven religious landscape of India. While Sikhism has its own distinct identity and scriptures, its interaction with other religious traditions, including Hinduism, has shaped its history and practices. The Kumbh Mela, as a melting pot of diverse spiritual beliefs, provided a platform for these interactions, fostering an environment of exchange and mutual influence.

However, it is important to note that the primary focus of Sikhism remains on the teachings of the Gurus as enshrined in the Guru Granth Sahib. While some Sikhs may participate in the Kumbh Mela, it is not a central tenet of the Sikh faith.
