In two highway accidents involving devotees on their way to the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, three people were killed and more than 40 others badly injured. The accidents took place on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, respectively, in Bharatpur and Kanpur.

In the first incident, a truck rammed a vehicle that had four devotees on board the Bharatpur-Karauli state highway close to Kurwriya village in Rajasthan. The tragedy of it saw three devotees perish in the crash, with three others hurt. “We got down to the spot soon, and the team took the injured to a nearby hospital in Bayana,” the police said. Unfortunately, three of the victims died on arrival. They included the deceased as Gopal Singh of Rudawal, who was the driver of the car, Ram Chandra of Karauli (age 30) and Lakhan Singh of Karauli (age 35). After the postmortem examination, their bodies were later handed over to their families.

In a second incident, devotees were injured in a road accident as a bus they were travelling in collided with a trailer truck on the Agra-Lucknow highway near the Bakewar overbridge in Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh. The bus, which was on its way from Delhi and Faridabad, had crashed on its way to the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj. Rescue operations had to be performed to free the bus driver from the wreckage as his impact was trapped by the collision. Devotees who were injured were rushed to a hospital nearby for treatment.

The two accidents have also triggered worries about the safety of the thousands of adherents that travel to the Mahakumbh, with authorities asking vigilance and extra precaution while passing highways during this religious gathering.
