In the Safdarganj area of Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, a pick-up van carrying devotees returning from the Prayagraj Mahakumbh overturned injuring atleast ten people last evening. An official police confirmation of Saturday said the accident happened near Maulabad village under the Safdarganj Police Station limits.

The vehicle reportedly lost control and flipped, before injuring the passengers on board. Four of the ten injured were reportedly in serious condition and rushed to the district hospital for better medical care. Later these remaining injured persons were treated at a government hospital in Sirauli Gauspur and later discharged.

Rescue and relief operations were started at the spot of the accident by police officials and they also arrived promptly. Though the cause of the crash has not been confirmed in the preliminary investigation, it appears the driver may have lost control while speeding or due to road conditions. Authorities say that while further investigation will still take place, there is ‘no evidence at present that this presents any danger to the wider public’.

Due to heavy traffic on major routes, hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Prayagraj Mahakumbh from all over the country. Officials have urged people to maintain a proper vehicle and follow road safety guidelines so mishaps are avoided with the rising number of pilgrims.

Pilgrims have been asked by the district administration to take the registerd transport, be careful while travelling in night hours. Meanwhile, police are monitoring the conditions of the families of the injured devotees and have notified them.
