Bhopal: With less than a month left for the much-awaited Madhya Pradesh elections, the state police is keeping an eye on every nook and corner to ensure security arrangements. In the context of the proper conduct of elections, the Chief Electoral Officer has issued orders to the district collectors to cancel the arms license of all unreceived weapons belonging to the state.
In accordance with the norms, before the assembly elections, all licensed weapons have to be surrendered to the authorities. In this series, the licenses of about 10500 weapons have been temporarily terminated following the order by the collector. Of these, only 46 have been given permission to possess licensed weapons as per the rules.
Sources reveal that only 8000 weapons have been collected so far and preparations to cancel 2500 licenses are underway.
Earlier on 19 October, the district administration issued orders to deposit the licensed weapons as a common practice, although the last date for depositing the arms had passed. As on October 19, more than 4000 licensed weapons were not deposited. The district administration expressed its concern and urged all licensees to comply with the order.
In the meantime, the MP assembly polls has taken steps to increase security and prevent any misuse of firearms. They have deployed additional police personnel in sensitive areas and have increased patrolling. They have also asked people to report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.
