While the monsoon may have faded, the echoes of dengue linger in Madhya Pradesh. Though 2023 saw a significant decline compared to last year’s outbreak, with 1595 cases reported as of October, concerns remain, particularly with recent spikes in Bhopal and Indore.
Bhopal, the state capital, has borne the brunt in recent months, recording over 740 cases by November. This is nearly a fifth of the total cases reported in the entire state last year. Indore, another major city, has also seen a rise, with over 223 cases confirmed.
Experts attribute the resurgence to factors like climate change, urbanization, and inadequate preventive measures. Stagnant water due to improper drainage creates breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, the dengue vectors. Additionally, increased population density in urban areas facilitates the spread of the virus.
The Madhya Pradesh government has been taking steps to control the outbreak. Fogging campaigns, awareness drives, and improved sanitation measures are being implemented. However, continued vigilance and community participation are crucial to prevent future surges.
