Indore– As the new academic session commences on June 20, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of students travelling to school, particularly in light of frequent bus accidents. The Transport Department has warned school management sternly, emphasising they will be held responsible if buses operate without permits. Additionally, strict action will be taken if auto-vans exceed their seating capacity. A thorough checking drive will be initiated by the transport department, starting from the following day.
Recently, both school and passenger buses have been involved in accidents, prompting the RTO to launch a campaign to inspect the condition of buses and enforce compliance. Schools are required to maintain valid permits and keep the buses in reasonable condition. Failure to comply with these regulations will result in penalties, including four times the regular fine, and actions taken against the management.
Pradeep Kumar Sharma, the Regional Transport Officer, highlighted the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court and CBSE regarding school buses. Despite government tax exemptions for school buses, negligence in obtaining permits and ensuring fitness will not be tolerated. The RTO will also address the issue of overcrowding in auto-rickshaws and vans.
The checking drive will commence promptly as the school reopens, with RTO teams visiting schools and campuses to scrutinise the buses. They will verify necessary documents and assess the buses’ overall condition and safety features. The facilities provided to children during transportation will also be evaluated.
Regional Transport Officer Sharma affirmed that the checking campaign would be an ongoing process, with teams conducting inspections in various areas as part of their mandate. The department has instructed the teams to carry out the campaign effectively, prioritising the safety of students during their daily commute.
