Bhopal: The newly built bridge between Bhopal and Hoshangabad that connects the capital city to Nagpur and Jabalpur failed to withstand the first monsoon rain and scalloped. The incident was reported on the intervening nights of Sunday Monday shortly after which the traffic was diverted.

On being contacted, the Chief Engineer of the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation stated a portion of the bridge nearly 45 mt in length retaining wall on the service road has been damaged. In the same statement he assured immediate repair, sources in the know said.
The IMD on Sunday issued an orange alert predicting very heavy to heavy rainfall in eight districts including Bhopal, Raisen, Rajgarh, Sehore, Vidisha, Guna, Agar Malwa and Shajapur districts of the central state. Some major rivers in the state are in spate due to intermittent rainfall over the last couple of days, prompting the authorities to open sluice gates of some vital dams. A yellow alert was also issued in isolated places of seven divisions – Bhopal, Jabalpur, Narmadapuram, Gwalior, Chambal, Rewa and Sagar.
