Indore: For the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan 2023 to be organized in Indore, the IMC authorities have decided to incorporate the Zero Waste Policy as the theme of the event.

Indore, the largest city in Madhya Pradesh and central India’s business and education hub, has set a record of winning the title of the cleanest city in India every year since 2017. After making the whole city Open Defecation Free (ODF) and landfill-free, for the last few years, Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has been making the city cleaner by focusing on waste management at the source.

For the Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan to be held at the Brilliant Convention Center from January 8 to 10, as many as 3000 NRIs are expected to arrive tentatively. At the event the NRIs will understand waste management of Indore Municipal Corporation city and Asia’s largest Bio CNG plant built in trenching ground.

The guests would be provided with a tourism package under which they would visit Mandu, Ujjain and Omkareshwar. Electric buses have been deployed for the tourists. Further plastic has been replaced by flax and digital promotions have been brought in place instead of hoardings and banners.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated every year in India on 9 January and was formally established in 2003. The day also commemorates return of father of nation Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa in Mumbai (then Bombay) on January 9, 1915.

The day is celebrated to mark contribution of overseas Indian community to the development of India. Celebrations of the day are sponsored by Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
