Mumbai: Noted Assamese singer Zubeen Garg died during a sea outing in Singapore on September 19. The 52-year-old singer, known for several hit songs, including ‘Ya Ali’, was cremated today with full state honours. After the completion of the second post-mortem, his body was taken to Sarsajai Stadium and then to the cremation ground.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared a three-day mourning, following which all official entertainment and celebrations have been put on hold. Today, CM Biswa tweeted and bid a final farewell to the singer.
Thousands of fans have gathered in Kamarkuchi NC village near Guwahati to attend the funeral. In a tribute to the legendary singer, Assam Minister and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Working President Keshab Mahanta announced that 10 bighas of land have been allocated by the state government to construct a memorial at the funeral site.
Zubeen Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg pays her last respects to her husband. The couple got married on February 4, 2002.

Earlier on Sunday, followers of Assamese star Zubeen Garg organized a road block, which blocked National Highway 37 just outside the Ajanta bypass, just before entering Jorhat. The protestors, who were primarily his ardent followers, carried placards, which required the mortal remains of the singer to be revisited to Jorhat, where he spent his childhood, rather than cremated at Guwahati. The demonstration took several hours and had an impact on the traffic, and caught the eye of state officials.
