New Delhi: In response to reports that indicated Amazon’s legal representatives allegedly bribed officials in India, the centre today asserted a ‘zero-tolerance policy’ towards corruption.
“As far as the government of India is concerned there is ZERO tolerance towards corruption of ANY kind in the government,” officials said.
Government officials ascertained legal action against the e-commerce platform stating, ” Amazon has been spending more than Rs 2,000 crore in legal fees. It’s time to think about where all it’s going. The whole system seems to work on bribes and that is not the best of business practices. ” It is also reported that Confederation of All India Traders has written to Union Minister Piyush Goyal demanding a CBI probe into the allegations.
According to sources, Amazon has launched an investigation against some of its legal representatives after reports of bribing Indian officials surfaced. On Monday it had informed to initiate a probe into the allegations stating its zero-tolerance policy on corruption.
The e-commerce vendor is currently being scrutinized by the Competition Commission of India over alleged anti-competitive practices, predatory pricing and preferential treatment of sellers.
