Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his wife, Dhanashree Verma, are at the final stage of their divorce. Thursday saw the couple arrive at Mumbai’s Bandra Family Court to officially end the months of speculation and tabloid fodder by the two to complete the process.

The Bombay High Court’s Wednesday ruling overturning the family court’s earlier rejection to dispense with the mandatory six-month cooling-off period in divorce cases has triggered this development. The high court asked the family court to speed up the issue and complete the divorce proceedings by Thursday, considering Chahal’s commitments to the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, which will start on Saturday.

Reports suggest that advocate Nitin Gupta appeared for the couple and stated that Chahal was unavailable from March 21 to chain IPL commitments. Gupta argued that any delay would only make the couple’s distress even longer. The court leapt at making an exception, as by then, the couple had been living apart since June 2022, exceeding the usual cooling-off period.

In 2020, Yuzvendra Chahal tied the knot with Dhanashree Verma, and they separated in February 2024. They asked for the family court at that time to waive the said period of six months. But the plea was initially rejected since Chahal had not completed paying the agreed ₹4.75 crore alimony; he had paid ₹2.37 crore.

With all legal and financial arrangements taken care of now, the family court is supposed to issue the final divorce decree. Both Chahal and Verma have decided to move on in their lives after this decision ends a high-profile relationship, which has been on the public radar for over a year now.
