Orissa: Cyclone YAAS has completed the process of landfall, reported Indian Meteorological Department on Wednesday afternoon. However, it has advised the fishermen not to venture to the sea for the rest of the day.
Uma Shankar Das, Senior Scientist at the Meteorological Department in Bhubaneshwar said,” Cyclone Yaas has completed the process of landfall. Rainfall will continue till tomorrow. Fishermen are advised not to venture till tomorrow morning because the sea condition is going to be rough.”
Landfall began at around 9 am today between Dhamra and Balasore. Huge devastation was witnessed across several parts of the state. IMD Director General of Meteorology Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said earlier in the day that the cyclone is likely to reach Jharkhand tomorrow morning.
The cyclone made landfall between Dhamra and Balasore in Orissa at 120-140 Km per hour during the initial phase. At 12:30 pm the cyclone was likely to move north-north-westwards and weaken gradually into a severe cyclonic storm in the next three hours, and into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent six hours, informed IMD.
This morning, 5.8 lakh people were evacuated from the low-lying areas of Orissa. All COVID facilities were also restored with essentials in vulnerable regions, informed Special Relief Commissioner PK Jena. 3 Army columns and an engineer task force were deployed in Orissa to supervise the aftermath of the storm.
