A senior official of the government on Tuesday announced a 48-hour extension to X Corp to file an elaborate compliance report on what it is doing to ensure that its AI chatbot, Grok, does not produce obscene and sexually explicit content. The extension will allow the Elon Musk-owned platform to get up to 5 pm on January 7 to respond to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
On Friday, MeitY earlier had given X, which was previously known as twitter, a 72-hour deadline, asking it to explain why the Grok AI chatbot was allegedly abused on its site. The ministry had raised serious concerns regarding the quality of content that is being created by the tool, especially cases where obscene content is created and also those which respond to sensitive political and religious topics.
In a letter dated January 2 in a strongly worded communication, MeitY noted what it termed as serious transgressions by X to provide sufficient protection against creation and distribution of sexually explicit material using Grok. The ministry also threatened that failure to comply with the Indian information technology laws within the known country would lead to the loss of the legal immunity granted to the intermediaries of the Indian laws.
The extra time was given after X reported to the ministry that most of its employees were on holiday owing to the intervening public holidays of Christmas and New Year as the reason why it could not meet the initial deadline. MeitY granted the request with the company being given a slight time to file its response.
Authorities claimed that during the days preceding the January 2 announcement, the ministry had been having talks with X compliance departments about the problematic responses created by Grok, such as content concerning political and religious matters. These consultations are said to have not been sufficient to hear the concerns of the government leading to the formulation of the official notice.
