As the diplomatic calendar for early 2026 unfolds, speculation is mounting regarding a significant high-level visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Israel. While the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has yet to issue a formal itinerary, diplomatic circles and recent media reports have pinpointed February 27–28, 2026, as the most likely dates for this historic trip.
A Landmark Return
If confirmed, this will mark Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Israel since his groundbreaking 2017 trip—the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister. Coming early in his third term, the visit underscores the “boundless potential” of the India-Israel partnership. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently teased the arrival during a public address, stating:
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is coming to Israel next week. Our countries have a strong alliance, and we will discuss all kinds of cooperation… Israel is very popular in India… I want you all to know this.”
Strategic Objectives
The visit is expected to move beyond traditional defense transactions toward “future-facing cooperation.” Key areas of focus likely include:
- Technology & Innovation: Joint ventures in AI, quantum research, and cybersecurity.
- Economic Ties: Progressing toward a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to boost bilateral trade.
- Agriculture: Expanding “Centres of Excellence” for advanced water management and semi-arid farming.
- Regional Stability: Discussions on the “Gaza Peace Plan” and India’s role as a stabilizing force in West Asia.
India-Israel relations were elevated to the level of a strategic partnership during PM Modi’s visit in 2017. In July 2017, PM Modi made a historic three-day visit, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the country. The visit, which lasted from July 4th to 6th, marked the 25th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Since then, the two countries have focused on expanding cooperation in areas such as innovation, research, technology, and “Make in India.” This partnership has led to a strengthening of technology-based collaboration.
