Out of 227 seats of BMC, there is a direct contest between the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance and Shiv Sena (UBT)-Maharashtra Navnirman Sena on 32 seats. The voter turnout for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election, as of 9:30 AM, stood at 7.12%,
This situation has arisen because the Congress-Bahujan Vanchit Aghadi (VBA) alliance has not fielded any candidate in these seats. Whereas Raj-Uddhav Thackeray are contesting the elections together.
In the capital city, Mumbai, voting is taking place in 227 wards, with approximately 1,700 candidates contesting. A total of 1,03,44,315 citizens are eligible to vote in the BMC polls. Of these, 55,16,707 are male voters, 48,26,509 are female voters, and the number of other voters is 1,099.
The undivided Shiv Sena was a strong force in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. It won 84 seats contesting in alliance with the BJP, which won 82 seats. However, the tables have turned this time following Shiv Sena’s split in 2022. For the Thackeray brothers, Raj and Uddhav, these local body polls are a fight for regaining lost prestige. It will also test if the Thackeray surname still carries as much weight as it once did in the city and the state.
The BMC elections are also being held after a nearly three-year delay. Crowds of people were seen at polling booths since early morning. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar, and Sachin Tendulkar cast their votes. All of them appealed to the public to cast their votes.
NCP is contesting alone in Pune. Voting is being held today in 29 municipal corporations of Maharashtra. Voting has started from 7:30 am and will continue till 5:30 pm. Its results will be declared on Friday. The most important is the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) where elections are being held on 227 seats after 2017. Here, a figure of 114 is required for the majority.
