Manipur– Recent incidents of violence have escalated the tensions in Manipur, a conflict-torn state in northeastern India. Reports indicate that automatic weapons were fired from Kwakta in the Bishnupur district and Kangvai in the Churachandpur district, resulting in intermittent bursts of firing throughout the night. Alongside the gunfire, there have been multiple instances of mob build-up, attempted vandalism, and arson.

Joint forces, including the Army, Assam Rifles, Rapid Action Force, and state police, conducted a Flag March in Imphal East district until midnight to restore order. However, attempts to vandalise and set fire to various locations have persisted. At the Palace Compound near Advance Hospital, a mob of approximately 1,000 people assembled and attempted arson and vandalism. The RAF intervened, deploying tear gas and rubber bullets, resulting in two civilians sustaining injuries.

Similar incidents occurred near Manipur University, where a mob of 200 to 300 people gathered and attempted to vandalise the residence of a local MLA. The RAF swiftly dispersed the crowd. Another group of 300 to 400 individuals targeted the armoury of Iringbam Police Station in Imphal West district, prompting the RAF to intervene and prevent further damage.

In the early morning, the BJP office in Sinjemai was also surrounded by a mob numbering between 200 and 300 people. An Army column successfully dispersed the crowd. Additionally, the residence of the state BJP president, Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, was targeted but was protected by the Army and RAF.

These incidents of violence follow the recent burning of Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh’s home, which was carried out by a mob of 1,200 individuals who launched petrol bombs.

The situation in Manipur remains highly volatile, with clashes between two communities and increasing attacks on the properties of political leaders. The central government is trying to implement a peace plan; however, the law and order situation in the region remains precarious. Immediate measures are required to restore peace and stability and prevent further escalation of violence.
