Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia posed with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, which fueled rumors that they could be candidates for the upcoming Haryana assembly polls, which will take place on October 5. The meeting, as some papers claim, is connected with their possible candidacy on Congress tickets. It was believed that both wrestlers might just leave their current positions to vie for these political positions.

After coming back from the Paris Olympics, where a disqualification regarding the weight issues touched Vinesh Phogat, she met former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. In his own words, Hooda said that Congress had no problem if anyone wanted to join the party. Candidatures of Phogat and Punia became subject to rumour when they also paid a visit to New Delhi’s Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal on Wednesday.

Haryana assembly elections are important elections as the BJP government wants a third term while Congress wants to take its revenge on the BJP. The Election Commission of India later changed the election date from October 1 to October 5.

When the Wrestling queen, Vinesh Phogat, had been camping at the Shambhu border, supporting the farmers protesting for MSP law- she was quizzed about her political candidature. To which Phogat replied, “I don’t wish to discuss it. My focus is on the farmers of the country, not the election system. I want to stand for my people. ” Thus, the main subject of her interest remains farmers and their battle, not politics.

Ex-Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda rubbished off all the suggestions relating to Phogat’s possible Congress ticket as just an example of a ‘hypothetical question’ indicating that there are still a lot of question marks surrounding both of them.
