Satish Shah, veteran actor and comedian, who was greatly applauded due to his perfect comic timing and varied acts, died at the age of 74. The news was confirmed by filmmaker and close friend Ashoke Pandit on Saturday afternoon in the form of a video message uploaded on Instagram. Pandit informed, “Sad and shocked to tell you, that our dear friend and a great actor, Satish Shah, passed away a few hours ago because of kidney failure. He was taken to Hinduja Hospital, where he died. A great loss to our industry. Om Shanti.”

Satish Shah was born in the family of Gujarati family in the old state of Bombay in 1951 and later entered the acting industry in the 1970s. In 1984, he reached mass popularity with a successful sitcom, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, directed by Kundan Shah and Manjul Sinha, in which he was acclaimed to play 55 different characters. He further entertained his fans with such hit sitcoms as Filmi Chakkar and Ghar Jamai in the 1990s. But it was his performance as the lovable Indravadan Sarabhai in the cult film Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (20042006) that made him a household name and a favorite to a whole generation of audience.

Although his initial movie appearance was a small part in the 1970 film Bhagwan Parshuram, the success of his movie career in terms of recognition came with his roles in Umrao Jaan and Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai a decade later. His role as a dead body in the satire comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is one of his most memorable and iconic works in the Indian film industry. He had been featured in a number of successful films in supporting parts over the years, including Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Hero No. 1, Main Hoon Na, and Fanaa. His last film on the big screen was Humshakals in 2014.
