Dehradun: Due to rainfall in Uttarakhand, the unfortunate incident of the Dehradun Defence College building collapsing occurred on Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert on Sunday predicting severe rainfall and lightning activity in six districts over the next day due to consistent and heavy rains in the region.

The Dehradun Defence College, situated at the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas, plays a role in providing education in this area. Its website emphasizes its dedication to preparing students not for institutions like the National Defence Academy and various defence services examinations but also for challenging technical courses, such as those offered by the Indian Institute of Technology.

Expressing concerns about the weather conditions, the Meteorological Department stated that isolated areas in Dehradun, Pauri, Tehri, Nainital, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar are at risk of experiencing extremely heavy rain or thunderstorms accompanied by intense lightning within the next 24 hours.

Alongside the collapse of the college building, continuous rainfall has caused disasters in Uttarakhand. A significant landslide triggered by a downpour has blocked a section of the Badrinath National Highway located in the Chamoli district’s Pipalkoti region.

The aftermath has led to the burial of vehicles causing disruptions to transportation and underscoring the seriousness of the situation. The authorities are actively vigilant and striving to handle the circumstances prioritizing the safety of residents.
