The United States firmly backs India’s sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh amidst escalating tensions with China. Responding to recent claims by Chinese military officials, the Biden administration reiterated its recognition of Arunachal Pradesh as Indian territory. State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel emphasized the US’s staunch opposition to unilateral attempts by China to assert territorial claims across the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
This statement follows remarks from Chinese defence ministry spokesman Colonel Zhang Xiaogang, asserting China’s sovereignty over the southern part of Xizang, which it refers to as Tibet, including what it terms as “Zangnan” or Arunachal Pradesh. China’s persistent objections to Indian leaders’ visits to Arunachal Pradesh underscore its longstanding territorial dispute with India.
India has consistently rejected China’s claims over Arunachal Pradesh, affirming its integral status within the Indian territory. The Ministry of External Affairs dismissed China’s assertions as “absurd” and reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh remains an inalienable part of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the region, where he inaugurated the strategically significant Sela Tunnel, further emphasized India’s commitment to bolstering infrastructure and connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh.
The Sela Tunnel, situated at an altitude of 13,000 feet, facilitates all-weather connectivity to Tawang and enhances troop movement along the frontier. India’s dedication to enhancing infrastructure in the region reflects its strategic importance in border security and territorial integrity.
The Biden administration’s explicit support for India’s sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh signals a united stance against Chinese territorial assertiveness in the region. As tensions persist along the disputed border, diplomatic efforts to reinforce India’s territorial integrity gain significance.
In the face of China’s persistent claims and provocations, India remains steadfast in asserting its sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh and upholding its territorial integrity. The Biden administration’s unequivocal endorsement of India’s position strengthens bilateral ties and underscores the shared commitment to regional stability and security.
