Surprisingly, the United States embassy in New Delhi on Monday posted messages on social media platforms indicating that the India-US partnership was at new heights. These posts were published when bilateral relations are strained, as not seen in close to 20 years, much of it owing to the trade measures and tariff actions that the Donald Trump administration has put in place.

The relationship between the United States and India keeps growing higher and higher – a characteristic of the 21st century. We are highlighting the individuals, developments, and opportunities that propel us forward this month and doing it in coordinated posts on X, Facebook, and Instagram, the embassy said.

The posts focused on innovation, entrepreneurship, defence collaboration, and people-to-people relations as the basis of the relationship. The note was accompanied by a message from the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who wrote: The long-standing friendship between our two peoples is the foundation of our collaboration and our drive to move forward as we fulfil the huge potential of our economic partnership.

According to officials who were well aware of the development, the move was to bring out the long-term benefits in the bilateral relationship and to assure the concerned parties that the relationship would not falter. Nevertheless, the timing was remarkable, after trade wrangles topped the recent talks at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China. It was there that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the stabilising role of their economies within the global order as uncertainty builds up.

Meanwhile, new tensions have arisen as Trump last week decided to increase tariffs on Indian products twofold, introducing a punitive tariff of 25 per cent. However, as the officials of India insist that the talks on a trade agreement are still underway, senior Trump advisors have attacked India for buying Russian oil.
