The manufacturer of Predator Drones, General Atomics, has received notification from the US State Department regarding the approval of a ‘tiered review’ for the sale of 31 MQ9B drones to India. Within 24 hours, the Congressional notification is expected to be submitted. General Atomics has informed ranking officials in the Modi government, including those involved in national security matters.

Although the Indian government has not revealed details about the deal sources in Washington confirm that an official notification for the sale of 31 MQ9B Predator drones to India is imminent. Among these drones 15 will be allocated to the Indian Navy while eight each will be acquired by both the Indian Army and Indian Air Force for altitude long endurance missions.

Mathew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, highlighted growth in defense partnership between the US and India over the years. Miller emphasized this proposed drone deal. Initially announced during Prime Minister Modi’s visit, it holds potential for advancing strategic technology cooperation and military collaboration in this region. He also stressed Congress’ vital role in overseeing arms transfers by ensuring consultations with members before formal notifications are made to address any questions or concerns.

Accordingly, it seems that the negotiations for the GE 414 engine agreement between India and the US are moving forward smoothly. The CEO of the company has apparently shared this information with ranking officials in the Modi government. It is worth noting that security advisors from both countries are handling both drone and aircraft engine deals.

These drones have significantly enhanced India’s maritime domain awareness, particularly in addressing challenges posed by Houthi missiles and Somali Pirates in the Red Sea.
