A day after four people were killed in police firing in Leh during protests for statehood and Sixth Schedule safeguards for Ladakh, which turned violent, leading to the torching of the BJP office, Independent Lok Sabha MP from Ladakh, Mohmad Haneefa, said Thursday that police firing was unwarranted and that there should be a fair probe into the violence and accountability fixed.

The Union Home Ministry on Thursday cancelled the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act license of activist Sonam Wangchuk’s non-governmental organisation. This came a day after four persons were killed and more than 80 were injured in police firing in Leh during a protest demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had, two months ago, initiated a preliminary inquiry into alleged violations of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act by Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh, a non-governmental organisation run by Wangchuk.

A government order signed by the home ministry’s Deputy Secretary Rajesh Kumar T said the decision to cancel the licence was taken “considering the facts and position narrated by the organisation”.

The Union Home Ministry had assured in Ladakh that the High-Powered Committee (HPC) for talks would meet with us within a month. But that (HPC) meeting was held very late and now (another) one will be on October 6. This is the first time that the Leh and Kargil populations have come together to protest. In the hunger strike, many fell ill and had to be hospitalised.
