Uttarakhand will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on January 27, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s secretary Shailesh Bagoli has said, just a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Dehradun. On the same day, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will also launch the UCC portal.
In his Republic Day message, CM Dhami extended his greetings to the people of Uttarakhand and highlighted the state government’s preparations to implement the UCC in “Devbhoomi”. He emphasised that Uttarakhand will become the first state in India to enforce a Uniform Civil Code, reported sources.
“The UCC portal will be launched at 12:30 pm on January 27 at the Secretariat. Uttarakhand will be the first state in independent India to implement UCC,” said Shailesh Bagoli, CM Dhami’s secretary, according to sources.
The implementation of the UCC was a major commitment of the BJP in the run-up to the 2022 assembly polls, which saw the party storm to power for a second consecutive term.
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India is a proposal to create a single set of laws for all citizens, regardless of their religion, in matters of marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and succession. Currently, these personal matters are governed by separate religious laws.
Key Points On Uniform Civil Code
- Constitutional Basis: Article 44 of the Indian Constitution, a Directive Principle of State Policy, encourages the state to secure a UCC for all citizens.
- Goal: To promote gender equality, national integration, and simplify the legal system.
- Controversies: Concerns exist about its potential impact on religious freedoms and minority rights.
- Debate: Proponents argue for its progressive nature, while critics fear the loss of cultural identity.
- Implementation: Goa is the only state in India with a UCC, based on the Portuguese Civil Code of 1867.
