After a stressful standoff involving the military between India and Pakistan, which lasted for a period of four days, the two nations agreed on a ceasefire agreement on May 10 to stop any form of hostility over land, air, and seas. This development was reportedly after the DGMOs of the two countries allegedly agreed to keep peace on their borders. In the aftermath, both the United Nations has welcomed the move and called upon both sides to use the ceasefire as a chance to iron out the long-standing bilateral issues.
The UN spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, speaking on behalf of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, said that he hoped the ceasefire would be maintained and could be used as a foundation for ending more profound wars between the two nations. “The ceasefire is holding. I believe that we have realized that we are in a better place than what we were at before. We hope that the ceasefire will not be broken, we hope that the parties will use this to handle most of the issues out standing between the two,” he said during a press briefing.
Secretary-General Guterres had commended the ceasefire agreement earlier, terming it a “positive step” towards regional peace. In a statement released by the UN, Guterres highlighted the fact that the ceasefire could be used to build everlasting peace and establish a conducive environment for dealing with larger, long-term problems between India and Pakistan.
The ceasefire came after India launched their ‘Operation Sindoor’ on 7th May, which was carried out in the form of a series of retaliatory strikes on nine terror camps situated in Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir. The operation was made as a retaliation towards the 22nd of April terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir that killed 26 people.
Though U.S. President Donald Trump publicly took the credit for the brokering of the ceasefire, the Indian officials had made it clear that the agreement was the direct result of military-level communication between the two countries, ruling out any third-party intervention.
