Tripura: Late on Thursday night, a vehicle that included two Bangladeshi nationals killed and one wounded occurred on the India-Bangladesh border of Tripura South Tripura district, which has been confirmed by the police on Friday. The case happened after they were reported to be sneaking in contraband, among others, Viagra tablets worth 14-15 lakh in the Indian Territory.
The police said that the gang of Bangladeshis, along with Indian accomplices, attempted the border crossing even after being warned by the BSF many times. The smugglers are said to have beaten up BSF personnel using sharp objects, and one jawan was injured. In reply, the BSF fired in self-defence. One of the smugglers was killed on the spot, identified as Litan Miah, whereas two others were injured. One of the injured died in one of the hospitals in Bangladesh.
After undertaking a post-mortem, the corpse of the deceased was returned to the Indian territory and delivered to the Bangladesh officials. The suspects have been booked under various clauses, one among them is the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and the Passport (Entry into India) Act, and also possession of the bomb under an attempt to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Follow-up action saw two suspected South Tripura district Indian smugglers who were concerned to have connections with the group being arrested by the police. There are still investigations to be performed into the names of other members of the smuggling network which is going on the border.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha had already reaffirmed earlier that there will be no entry of illegal immigrants who are people of Bangladesh or Rohingya who are of Myanmar origins into Tripura. He claimed that any person who tries to infiltrate will be repelled according to the law.
Only West Bengal borders Tripura with an 856-kilometre border line after Bangladesh. This border is mostly fenced, but there are vast areas that are not fenced due to local differences, and therefore, these areas become centres of smuggling and illegal crossings.
