Technology: Amidst its tussle with the Indian government, Twitter appointed Global Legal Policy Director Jeremy Kessel as the grievance officer for India to follow the centre’s new rules for social networking websites. However, it doesn’t seem like Twitter’s intentions are to comply with the IT rules 2021.
This news surfaced a day after Twitter’s interim resident grievance officer for India has stepped down, leaving the micro-blogging site without a grievance officer as mandated by the new IT rules to address complaints from Indian subscribers, according to a source.
The source said that Dharmendra Chatur, who was recently appointed as Twitter’s interim resident grievance officer for India by Twitter, relinquished his post.
The development comes at a time when the micro-blogging platform has been engaged in a tussle with the Indian government over the new social media rules. It is noted that the website no longer displayed his name as the IT Grievances office. Instead, one can notice the company’s name and E-mail ID in place.
With its recent involvements in Congress toolkit row and the Loni Assault Case; it is witnessed that the microblogging site has lost its immunity and will be held responsible for all content posted by its users on its platform.
As per the new IT Lawsuit 2021; every social media firm is mandated to establish a grievance redressal mechanism for resolving complaints from the users or victims.
The big social media firms were mandated to appoint a chief compliance officer, a Nodal Contact Person and a resident grievance officer to address the Indian users’ grievances.
