Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated Canada’s commitment to strengthening its ties with India despite allegations of the government’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar as reported by Canada’s National Post. Trudeau emphasized the increasing influence of India. Highlighted the importance of constructive engagement between Canada, its allies and India.
During a press conference in Montreal, Trudeau stressed the significance of fostering relations with India considering its growing power and geopolitical prominence. He also pointed out that Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy reflects its intentions in this matter. However, Trudeau also underlined the need for India to collaborate with Canada to uncover all facts pertaining to this issue while adhering to the principles of the rule of law.
Trudeau mentioned that he received assurances from the United States that Secretary of State Antony Blinken would address made allegations regarding India’s involvement in Nijjar’s murder during his meeting with Indian counterpart S Jaishankar in Washington DC. Trudeau emphasized the seriousness of this situation, stating that all democratic nations and countries committed to upholding the rule of law should take allegations seriously.
He emphasized that Canada is carefully and conscientiously addressing the issue, guided by the principles of the rule of law. They are working together with their partners, including when engaging with the Government of India.
