Mumbai – A festive end to the ten-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival turned into a day of mourning in Maharashtra, as at least four people drowned and 13 others went missing during Ganesh idol immersions on Sunday. The incidents, confirmed by police, occurred in different districts across the state, casting a somber shadow over the final day of celebrations.

“Two men were swept away in the Bhama river at Waki Khurd and another one at Shell Pimpalgaon. Another person slipped into a well at Birwadi in Pune rural,” quoted an official as saying.

In Nanded district, three people were swept away in a river at Gadegaon. “One of them was later rescued and search was on for the other two persons,” police said.

The incidents serve as a grave reminder of the potential dangers associated with the large-scale event, which draws massive crowds to water bodies. Despite repeated advisories from authorities urging caution, the festive enthusiasm often leads to individuals misjudging the risks of currents and slippery riverbanks.

Ganesh Visarjan Bomb Threat

The incident comes just two days after the city was rattled by a chilling threat call claiming that 34 “human bombs” carrying 400 kg of RDX had been planted in vehicles across Mumbai to trigger explosions that would “shake the entire city.” The call, made to the traffic police helpline on Friday, was traced to an organisation identifying itself as “Lashkar-e-Jihadi.”

Police had stepped up security across Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai, as lakhs of people took part in Ganesh idol immersions marking the end of the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Over 21,000 police personnel were deployed for crowd control and vigilance during visarjan.
