New Delhi: A crucial meeting between top wrestlers led by Bajrang Punia and sports minister Anurag Thakur at his residence today. The government continued its efforts to reach out to the wrestlers who have been protesting since January this year against the outgoing WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The meeting with Thakur was called to break the impasse.
Anurag Thakur had tweeted, “The government is willing to have a discussion with the wrestlers on their issues. I have once again invited the wrestlers for the same”.
The wrestlers have found the meeting inconclusive.
This is the second meeting between the government and the protesting wrestlers, who have already met Amit Shah on Saturday night. During the meeting, wrestlers were assured that the police investigation shall be concluded by June 15.
Elite wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia have been leading the protests, demanding the arrest of WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for the alleged sexual exploitation of women wrestlers. Meanwhile, WFI chief who is also a Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha MP will address a party rally in Katra area of Uttar Pradesh’s Kaiserganj, his constituency on June 11. The rally is being organised under BJP’s Mahasampark Abhiyan for the 2024 elections.
