Tamil Nadu Excise Minister S. Muthusamy recently voiced strenuous criticism against the Enforcement Directorate (ED), claiming that ED officials were targeting state government officials as part of its investigation into a multi-crore corruption case linked to the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC). The minister maintained that these ED moves were intended to target the state government and contravened the directives of the Supreme Court.
The minister strongly denounced the ED for carrying out what he called a “politically motivated campaign” against the Tamil Nadu government under DMK rule. The minister emphasized that the state would provide every support to its officials and take appropriate legal actions against the central agency if its actions were found to be biased or unwarranted.
As per the minister’s statement, the ED conducted searches at TASMAC’s office and the homes of top officials, such as the Managing Director, without finding concrete proof of any misconduct. The minister noted that the allegations made by the ED were drawn from charges initially filed by the DVAC in transactions carried out under the previous AIADMK administration. However, the ED purposely presented the misdoings as having taken place during the reign of the present DMK administration.
Muthusamy asserted that the ED’s statements about the case contained far-fetched claims that intentionally deceived the people. He claimed that the TNED officials were repeatedly harassed and intimidated by the ED, but did not elaborate on any instances.
Minister Muthusamy once again expressed his firm opposition to how the ED proceeded. I strongly object to the ED’s biased conduct that goes against the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in comparable cases.
