Trinamool Congress has suspended Sheikh Shahjahan, the prime accused in the Sandeshkhali case involving sexual assaults and land grabbing. The decision comes hours after his arrest by West Bengal Police and a day before PM Narendra Modi’s visit. Shahjahan faces a six-year suspension, losing all party posts.
During a press conference, Trinamool leaders Derek O’Brien and Bratya Basu emphasized the state government’s commitment to the rule of law. They accused the BJP of attempting to create disruption over the Sandeshkhali issue. Derek O’Brien challenged the BJP to take action against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a tainted leader and former Wrestling Federation of India chief, turning the case into a Centre versus West Bengal and BJP versus Trinamool confrontation.
Bratya Basu highlighted that Sheikh Shahjahan’s arrest faced initial delays due to a court order, as noted by Abhishek Bandyopadhyay. After the restriction was lifted, West Bengal Police arrested Shahjahan, refuting claims of any central agency involvement.
Chronology of Events:
