Shashi Tharoor, Congress MP and head of an all-party group visiting the Americas, spoke positively about a revised statement from the Colombian government that sides with India in light of the Pahalgam attack.
Initially, Tharoor said he was unhappy with Colombia’s position, but after talking with Colombian officials, he explained India’s views on the matter more clearly. At the session held at the Gun Club by the Colombian Council on International Relations (Cori), Tharoor said, “I am greatly happy to inform you that the ministry has announced that it is withdrawing the earlier statement. They have stated publicly that they care about what we are going through.”
Colombia’s change occurred once there was backlash against their first response to India’s counter-terrorism steps, which appeared to downplay the danger and suggest India was wrong to take action. Tharoor highlighted that the purpose of their visit was exactly to encourage diplomatic talks. He went on to say that their goal was to tell people like the audience about their point of view and worries about what has happened in the country lately, including the terror attack and their response, which some, according to him, might not have fully grasped initially.
He stressed how important countries’ international image is today and that countries should recognize both the challenges of terrorism and India’s strong opposition to it. He noticed how Colombia was open to changing its stance after understanding India’s perspective.
The latest statement from Colombia is considered a win for India, proving that good relationships, discussions, and precise messaging help in diplomatic efforts.
