Congress senior leader, Shashi Tharoor, on Wednesday posted photos of a Parliament event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been addressing an international event, a speech, Tharoor claimed, showed the promise of India to democracy and diversity.
Tharoor was speaking of the 28 th Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers Conference, which was being held at the Central Hall of Sanvidhan Sadan and which united parliamentary heads of various countries. In one of the posts on X, the Thiruvananthapuram MP indicated that he had spent the day in Parliament meeting visiting delegates and hearing the opening plenary session delivered by the Prime Minister.
Another day in the Parliament with the Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers. Prime minister @narendramodi also spoke at the opening plenary session, highlighting the Indian dedication to democracy and diversity, which Tharoor wrote, was a chance to have fruitful meetings with foreigners.
The post was also an eye-catcher because the comments by Tharoor as the Prime Minister praise his address is in a political environment where the Congress party has frequently adopted a differentiating approach towards the BJP-led central government. Similar recognitions by Tharoor have elicited responses in his party in the past, leaders dissociating themselves with remarks perceived to be favourable to government.
It is not the first instance where Tharoor quotes a speech given by Prime Minister Modi publicly. In November, he had written an elaborate posting on X after the sixth Ramnath Goenka Lecture, given by the Prime Minister. Tharoor had earlier on expressed that he was happy to have attended the lecture even when he was struggling with a terrible cold and cough.
The latest remarks made by Tharoor further reveal his readiness to observe and comment on what is happening on both sides of the party lines, especially in the forums that have been related to parliamentary democracy and international dialogue.
