Praising the role of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in unnamed contributions to the country, the Congress MP Shashi Tharoor overwhelmed the Ministry on Tuesday but especially referred to the rebirth of the Nalanda University. His comments were made in the light of Nalanda Literature Festival where he stated that he was impressed with the newly constructed campus and the contribution the Indian diplomacy had made in re-establishing the historic centre of learning.

On a X post, Tharoor remarked that he was so impressed by the Nalanda University campus that he paid a visit to the festival. He praised the efforts of the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the Indian Diplomacy establishment saying that the resurrection of Nalanda should have been more appreciated. Tharoor published a reposting of a post by one of the former G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant, saying that the accomplishment would add to the list of numerous other valuable, yet frequently neglected, contributions of MEA to the national development of India.

On Sunday, the Nalanda Literature Festival 2025 was inaugurated in Rajgir, Bihar by the senior Congress leader with the presence of Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan. The Thiruvananthapuram MP attended multiple meetings during the two-day event, interacting with literature, scholars and students on the topics of literature, culture and education. It was a festival, which was celebrated in the ancient area of Nalanda and focused on the intellectual heritage of India and its modern revival.

Although Tharoor believed the revival of Nalanda University was a reason to rejoice at the academic and cultural rebirth of India, he also expressed his concerns over the overall situation in the country concerning higher education. In an interactive session with Professor Sachin Chaturvedi, he indicated that the representation of India in world university ranking is a point of concern. Tharoor pointed out that even with endowed faculties and students, the Indian universities are usually behind the rest of the world because of systemic problems.

He stressed on the importance of making long term investments, academic freedom and international co-operation to enhance the status of India in the global education sector.
