The worries of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on the Union Budget 2026-27 have raised a serious concern according to which Kerala has not been seen in the new fiscal plan by the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Going to X, Tharoor even organized a campaign online with a hash tag, InvisibleKerala, to show what he termed to be the neglect of his home state by the Centre.

Tharoor (40), who is the MP of Kerala capital Thiruvananthapuram, blamed both the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre and the Communist-led LDF government of Kerala when he told the media that our State Budget was constructed on a fantasy of central funds which are not being fulfilled in the present Union Budget. As the upcoming state assembly elections approach, the UDF headed by Congress people is keen to take on the current ruling party LDF and take back power in the state.

Tharoor further criticized on the location of National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) facilities as three new NIPERs have been announced, but there is still no understanding where they will be located. He mentioned that the South is overrepresented, only one NIPER is serving the whole region of Hyderabad, although Kerala has a good infrastructure in public health.

Another area in which Tharoor had interest was environmental issues. He pointed out the receding Kerala coastline that it is similar to a national security threat were the sea had reached a land border. But there is no special package on coastal protection, which is the indifference of the Centre to the geography of Kerala and the marginal treatment of its coastal population, he said.

The remarks by Tharoor are an indication that he is actively trying to speak on behalf of Kerala as an MP and party leader, and also seem to be in tandem with his own political desires in the looming Kerala elections and represent regional growth and justice.
