Terrorists and security forces engaged in an intense firefight in the Kuru area of Basantgarh Baghi at Udhampur district on Thursday, just one week before the much-awaited Amarnath Yatra. The combined effort (including the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police) was started as the operation codenamed Operation Bihali after the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police received credible intelligence of the existence of militants in the area.
The shootout continues, and the security personnel are carrying out a methodical search and kill exercise. The operation has been named after the Bihali region where the confrontation that is taking place is currently taking place. It has been confirmed by the authorities that the mission is to ensure that any possible threat is countered to the impending Amarnath Yatra, which is characterized by a mammoth influx of pilgrims every year. The Yatra will this year run from July 3 to August 9 and will attract thousands of pilgrims to the Amarnath cave shrine in South Kashmir.
The coincidence of the related encounter time has brought up the issue of security in the region, and more so, a couple of months ago, the country was hit by a tragic terror attack on a group of tourists in Pahalgam in April 2018, in which 26 people lost their lives. It is also in the wake of the high-impact Operation Sindoor, which was launched by the Indian side on May 7, and nine terror launching pads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Pakistan Punjab province were targeted. This operation was said to have killed more than 100 terrorists and caused a serious dent in the cross-border terror infrastructure.
Security agencies have been put on high alert, and extra forces have been deployed on the most important roads so that during the Amarnath Yatra, the security of pilgrims is taken care of. The government is also alert to stop any form of chaos and keep the area peaceful.
