Heavy rainfall resulting in water logging in various cities of Tamil Nadu has led to much disruption among the residents of Tamil Nadu. On Saturday, the downpour began in the early hours and especially hit the Thoothukudi district, where streets and low-lying areas were inundated, making life for locals difficult. The roads are waterlogged, making many residents struggle to commute and disrupt normal routines.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously warned people of parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday to expect showers, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds all day long. “Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds of speed 30 to 50 kmph can be expected over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and Karaikal, Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam and Rayalseema during March 22 to 24 as per the latest IMD update.”
Besides this, the IMD recently issued an orange alert for the Kanyakumari district, warning it that it may witness more intense thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall on March 22. The orange alert means that authorities and residents would come into play in case the situation turns potentially dangerous.
Apart from Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Theni, and Tenkasi districts of Tamil Nadu go under a yellow alert with thunderstorms and light to moderate rain forecasts. It has asked people to exercise caution and not to venture into waterlogged areas to prevent accidents.
Emergency services in the affected districts are also on alert, and authorities are monitoring them closely. The residents are urged to keep track of weather reports and follow the local authorities’ instructions regarding safety guidelines.
