On Wednesday, Nitin Gadkari announced that the government has resolved to build a new Green Express Highway between Surat and Kurnool, which will be a new real solution to the connectivity between the northern and southern India. The distance between Delhi and Chennai will be shortened with an approximate range of 320 kilometres and long-haul travelling will take shorter time.
Addressing the Rajya Sabha, the Question Hour, Gadkari stated that the project is one of the many initiatives that the government plans to use to modernise the highways in the country and boost economic connectivity among regions. The minister also believes that the new expressway will assist in reducing the time taken in the travel between Delhi and Mumbai to about 12 hours after the ongoing highway projects have been completed.
The minister said that the next route shall be starting at Surat in Gujarat and pass through such major cities as Nashik, Ahmednagar and Solapur to Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. The corridor will then offer better access to the major cities in the South like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kanyakumari and Kochi.
Gadkari announced that the project was merely a historic decision that will result in a new transport road connecting North and South India. According to him, the initiative will alleviate congestion in the current routes, enhance the efficiency of the logistics, and promote the growth of the economy because the country will be able to transport goods and passengers easier.
The announcement was given upon the inquiries posed by the members in terms of road infrastructure development and traffic in the regions like Kolhapur. Gadkari said that the government is still focusing on large scale highway projects to enhance national connectivity in order to cut on the travel time on major routes.
