New Delhi: The Supreme Court pronounced its order on a plea concerning its August 11 direction to permanently relocate stray dogs from streets to shelters in the Delhi National Capital Region. A special three-judge bench had reserved its order on the matter on August 14. The three-judge bench banned the feeding of stray dogs in public places and warned of appropriate action in case of violations. Furthermore, it has directed authorities in Delhi-NCR to start picking up stray dogs from all localities “at the earliest” and relocate the canines to dog shelters.

The initial directive from a two-judge bench, which instructed authorities to begin moving the canines, led to widespread protests by animal activists and celebrities across the country. The central question the court’s decision will address is, “So what will it be? Shelters or streets for these strays?” Concerns have been raised regarding the lack of infrastructure and adequate dog shelters in the NCR to properly implement the directive. The upcoming order is anticipated to determine the future of stray dogs in the region.
